How to Choose Oud Chip Grades: Collector vs Premium vs Standard
Three grades. Three price points. Three completely different customer profiles. If you're buying oud chips for resale — whether for a perfume shop in Dubai, an incense brand in Riyadh, or an online store shipping worldwide — choosing the right grade is the single most important sourcing decision you'll make.
This guide breaks down exactly what separates Collector, Premium, and Standard grade Chinese oud chips — and which one fits your business.
The Three-Grade System: Why It Exists
Not all oud chips are created equal. The same plantation, harvested at the same time, produces chips ranging from heavily resin-soaked (30%+ oil) to lightly fragrant (8% oil). Rather than selling mixed lots, reputable Chinese suppliers grade chips into three categories based on oil content, appearance, and burn quality. This lets buyers match their purchase to their market — instead of paying for quality their customers don't need, or selling quality their customers won't appreciate.
Collector Grade (30%+ Oil): The Luxury Choice
Collector grade oud chips are the top tier — pieces so saturated with resin that they appear almost black. When burned, they produce a rich, complex, long-lasting aroma with deep sweet and woody notes that fill a room for hours.
Who buys Collector grade? Premium perfume houses, luxury retailers, private collectors, and high-end hospitality (palace hotels, VIP majlis settings). These buyers are not price-sensitive — they want the best available product. In Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Collector grade chips are the standard for premium gifting and special occasions.
Price: $800–$1,200/kg FOB China. Retail markup is typically 2–3×.
MOQ: 100kg.
Premium Grade (15–30% Oil): The Sweet Spot
Premium grade is exactly what it sounds like — the middle tier that delivers quality burning at a price that works for wholesale distribution. The aroma is sweet and woody, with good longevity. These chips show visible resin but not the heavy saturation of Collector grade.
Who buys Premium grade? Mid-to-high-end retail, specialty oud shops, gift markets, and incense brands that position as premium but not ultra-luxury. This is the most versatile grade — it satisfies quality-conscious buyers without the Collector price tag.
Price: $400–$800/kg FOB China. Best value for most wholesale buyers.
MOQ: 100kg.
Standard Grade (8–15% Oil): The Volume Play
Standard grade is the workhorse of the oud trade. Lighter in appearance and fresher in aroma, these chips burn cleanly and provide a pleasant oud experience at an accessible price. They won't impress a collector, but they will satisfy a daily burner.
Who buys Standard grade? High-volume incense producers, daily burning retailers, bulk traders, and price-sensitive markets. This grade moves in the highest volumes because it serves the broadest customer base.
Price: $150–$400/kg FOB China. Lowest per-unit cost, highest volume potential.
MOQ: 100kg.
Which Grade Sells Best Where?
- Saudi Arabia & UAE: Premium and Collector dominate. Gulf buyers value quality and are willing to pay for it. Standard grade has a secondary market for daily household use.
- Southeast Asia: Standard and Premium. Price-sensitive markets with high volume. Collector grade has limited demand except in Singapore and high-end Bangkok.
- Europe & Americas: Premium dominates for retail. Collector for niche luxury. Standard for incense manufacturers.
Can You Mix Grades in One Order?
Yes — and smart buyers often do. A common strategy: order 60–70% Premium (your main product), 20–30% Standard (for price-sensitive customers), and 10% Collector (for high-end display and upselling). Mixed orders share the same CITES permit and shipping, reducing per-kg logistics costs. MOQ applies per grade.
Our Recommendation for First-Time Buyers
If you're new to importing Chinese oud, start with Premium grade. It's the most versatile — you can sell it to the widest range of customers while learning your market's preferences. Once you've made your first sale and understand what your customers ask for, you can add Collector or Standard to your next order.
We offer sample kits with approximately 50g of each grade so you can evaluate quality before committing to a bulk order. Shipping cost is deducted from your first order over $500.
